Gary Neville has urged footballers to take control of their own social media accounts.

The Manchester United legend’s plea comes after Phil Foden was said to have been left fuming with a tweet from his social media team directed at Kylian Mbappe.

The Man City star scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund as Pep Guardiola’s side progressed to the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday night.

And soon after Foden’s social media team tweeted a picture of the 20-year-old scoring with the caption: “@KMbappe are you ready?”

City will come up against Paris Saint-Germain superstar Mbappe in their semi-final first-leg tie on April 27.

And the Mail claim Foden was ‘less than impressed’ with those running the account, with the tweet since being deleted.

The post did not appear to go down well with fans either as they wondered why Foden immediately called out Mbappe instead of addressing his team’s performance.

It led to Neville questioning why footballers do not run their own social media accounts, with Joe Hart another footballer left embarrassed in recent weeks.

I mentioned on here a few weeks ago about players having their accounts run by social media companies. Lads run your own accounts! Your independent thought and authenticity is at stake . It’s your voice , not anyone else’s. Morning by the way . Go and attack the hell out of it ❤️ pic.twitter.com/M997r8kbWa

“I mentioned on here a few weeks ago about players having their accounts run by social media companies,” he tweeted.

Foden is now believed to have cut ties with the company managing his social media accounts.

Foden will still be on a high, however, after netting winning goals in both legs against Dortmund.

And the England midfielder’s performance in Germany resulted in high praise from his manager.

Guardiola said: “You have the feeling he is a guy who never hides.

“He always creates something. He is dynamic offensively, defensively and in the small spaces.

“He is learning to make decisions. He scored two important goals to help us be in the semi-finals.

“In the quarter-final of the Champions League he was the important player to help us go to play PSG.”

On Thursday’s talkSPORT Breakfast show ex-Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara was waxing lyrical over Foden’s talents – claiming he is already better than Paul Gascoigne!

Watching him this season he’s really come to the fore and made himself one of the top three players at Manchester City,” O’Hara explained.

“I was looking at it thinking, and I know people always compare him to Gascoigne, but I look at Foden and think he’s better than Gascoigne.

“I know that’s a big statement, but it’s just in terms of the way he’s going in his career and the way he plays. He’s doing it on the big stage already and he’s just a kid.

“And to do it at Manchester City in a Pep Guardiola team and to be so young and dominating games – two winners in two legs in a huge fixture.

“I just think he’s better than Gazza. For me, Gazza was my idol growing up. he won the FA Cup, he won the Scottish Premiership – we all know that doesn’t count as it means nothing.”

Manchester City quietly returned to Premier League action against West Ham United on Wednesday.

While most of the attention focused on the return of Champions League football, Pep Guardiola's men continued their futile defence of a title that effectively has Liverpool's name written on it.

Nevertheless, they had the chance to reduce the gap to 22 points against a side lingering in the relegation zone and at the time of writing, they lead 1-0 through Rodri's opener.

But the game was gathering awareness on Twitter for a wholly different reason than the football on the pitch; rather it was the fans around it.

And it wasn't actually the fact that some City supporters were campaigning against UEFA's recent decision to ban the club from the Champions League for two seasons.

Man City fans mocked on Twitter

Actually, the jokey term 'Emptihad' was once again doing the rounds as images emerged on social media of large swathes of the Etihad Stadium featuring empty seats.

As a result, many football fans made their usual jokes about the City fans supposedly being 'plastic' and that their support is insubstantial for their size after the 2008 takeover.

Combine that with their European ban and fans were quick to joke that City should be worried if this is their level of Premier League support when they could be expelled to League Two.

But don't just take our word for it, check out some of the reaction on Twitter and make up your own mind:

There's two ways to look at the situation.

Chelsea Twitter

On the one hand, it's a rearranged fixture in mid-week, so you've got to respect the fact some fans won't have prepared for this possibility and are saving their pennies for some of the bigger games.

Besides, nobody south of Nostradamus could have expected Storm Ciara to postpone the fixture out of nowhere.

But would you see this amount of empty seats at say Anfield? Probably not.

However, it's also worth tempering criticism when you look at cases like these because City actually get closer to their capacity than most Premier League clubs week in, week out.

Plus, the cost of attending football matches across four competitions is simply brutal, so I tip my hat to any supporters who turn up as often as they can through their own, hard-earned money.

As football becomes more and more saturated with money, it's the fans in the stands that keep the sport grounded and it's as much as the fault of the institution that empty seats rear their head.
